What is an Underbite?
Do you have an underbite?
An underbite is a form of malocclusion where the lower jaw protrudes out and slightly upward, causing your lower teeth to jut out and/or overlap the upper teeth.
Underbites are generally a result of heredity, though they can also be caused by jaw bone abnormalities, poor chewing habits and even thumb sucking.
Underbites are actually relatively uncommon, impacting between 5% and 10% of the population. Asian individuals tend to have a higher predisposition toward developing congenital underbites.
Unlike most overbites, which can go untreated with few negative health consequences, underbites place the individual at much higher risk of developing health problems such as TMJ, jaw pain and speech problems. Due to these serious health impacts, very few adults have hereditary uncorrected underbites, as this condition is usually corrected in childhood.
Underbites also mean that there’s a misalignment of the teeth, resulting in improper wear patterns that can cause the enamel to wear away prematurely. You’ll also be at higher risk of developing cavities, gum disease and tooth loss.
An underbite will also cause some serious aesthetic problems too, as the lower jaw will appear very prominent. When paired with a corresponding speech impediment, this can have a very dramatic impact on one’s self-esteem and confidence.
Braces are one of the most common methods for correcting a minor underbite. Braces are used in cases where the jaw size and position is normal or close to normal and in cases where the underbite arises primarily as a result of tooth position.
In childhood, there are lots of methods used to correct an underbite. Braces are one option, but they cannot impact the size and position of the chin and jaw bone. So kids may be fitted for a chin cap, reverse pull face mask or a jaw expander.
In adults with a serious underbite, braces can correct the problem partially, but surgery is typically required to alter jaw shape and position.
If you’re seeking to correct an underbite, braces may be an option for you.
